The Royal Bank of Scotland plc is a retail bank headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the
Royal Bank of Scotland Group, this Bank is a part of the largest banking group in Scotland (representing the world's largest company in terms of assets).
The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in 1727 by the Equivalent Society. Transformed into the Equivalent Company, the body entered the banking industry. In 1728, dhe Royal Bank of Scotland turned into the first bank that provided overdraft facility.
The following years witnessed nationwide expansion, and the first branch office, located outside of Edinburgh, was opened 1783 in Glasgow. Later on, branches opened in other Scottish towns: Dalkeith, Greenock, Dundee, and Rothesay, among others. During the 19th century, the bank completed several mergers with other Scottish banks.
The last half of the century was marked with further expansion into England. The bank opened its first London branch in 1874. After World War I, the bank acquired several English properties such as Drummonds Bank, Williams Deacon's Bank, and Glyn, Mills & Co.
In the beginning of the 20th century, the bank operated 158 branches with around 900 employees. In 1969, the institution undertook merger with National Commercial Bank of Scotland and turned into the largest Scottish clearing bank.
At present, the Royal Bank of Scotland has a network of around 700 branches, mainly in Scotland, as well as in England and Wales. Th employees working for RBS number 141,000. Its shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol RBS.L.
